There are two main types of fox terrier which are known as the smooth fox terrier and the wire fox terrier (sometimes called the standard fox terrier). The smooth fox terrier is very similar to the wire variety but they have a very distinct difference, the smooth variety has smoother hair and the wire variety has very coarse hair. They are both very intelligent and can be used as hunting dogs where they are raised. They are strong and playful and are excellent with children. They are often one of the choices that people have when adopting or choosing a specialized breed because they offer such great chemistry in almost any and all households.

One of the main problems that fox terriers will encounter is the need to continuously trim their nails. Even if the fox terrier is active and has plenty of exercise, they will have fast toenail growth which could hurt them if they are not kept trimmed. For the most part, smooth fox terriers will be okay with long periods of time without a hair trim but wire fox terriers will need at least 2 trims a month to ensure that their fur does not get very shaggy and matted. It is important to look into the option that you would be most suited for. They have an average dog lifespan of 12 or more years for a great long lifespan.
