An Overview of the Fox Terrier

The fox terrier is a quick moving, alert dog with an energetic, intelligent, and mildly bossy disposition. It comes in two varieties, wire haired and smooth and is descended from the British Isles. The fox terrier was primarily used for hunting foxes, being carried in saddlebags during hunting and released to follow the fox into his den or underground passages. The terrier was first found in Britain and has been mentioned as early as 55 BC. The terrier has been known for centuries as fearless, independent, joyful, and curious.

The standards for the fox terrier depicts a dog that is 15 ½ inches tall with a strong back. They have a long head with ears that fold forward. The tail is docked with compact feet with patched of black or tan on white. The Smooth Fox Terrier is a dog with a short, flat coat that is hard in texture. The Wire Fox Terrier has a double coat. The outer coat is wiry and harsh, but is dirt and weather resistant. The layer underneath is soft and oily, good for insulation.

Fox Terriers have a happy yet stubborn temperament that can be both endearing and frustrating at the same time. It is critical to make sure the terrier does not get the upper paw in the household and obedience training is recommended. It is advised that the fox terrier have a fenced in outdoor area to run and play. Be sure to keep an eye on the fox terrier, like any other terrier it does enjoy digging and can easily get loose!
