The wire fox terrier is a sturdy dog weighing between fifteen and twenty pounds. It is well balanced with a distinctive rough coke. The color is mostly white with brown specklings on the face and years as well as a splotch of brown color on the back. There can also be other black or brown markings throughout the body.
Wire fox terriers are known for their energy and intelligence. They require constant stimulation, exercise, and attention and have a low tolerance for boredom. This terrier is alert, quick, and friendly. They are very loving and playful dogs but require proper care and time. Their energy and intelligence makes them not suited for all dog owners as a lack of attention can result in destruction.
The wire fox terrier came from England and developed by fox hunters. This terrier breed was bred to chase foxes into burrows into the ground and their short tail was docked and used as a hunter to pull them out.
The wire fox terrier was owned by Queen Victory and her son, King Edward VII. The breed did not gain popularity, however, until the 1930′s. this breed later diminished in popularity in the late 20th century due to the changing living conditions of the western world, making it difficult to keep the hunting terriers in the city.
Today, the wire fox terrier has received the most Best in Show awards out of any other breed and are a beloved pet due to their fierce loyalty, intelligence, playfulness, and history of the breed.
